Well, another one over. Hate to see them go nowadays! Was asked a question on a UK Forum. Thought I remembered something on here. Years ago. So searched the archives. It was there, post I was looking for. Lot of excellent info on here! But seems Facebook is the place to go for pigeon sites. Some content but mostly advertising.

Any babies yet, Hal?
I got the bands last Thursday along with the contents of a couple of bags of Kilpatrick's minerals. It's good that Denise taped the box well but a better way would be to put each bag into a freezer bag for extra protection. My first ones will be ready for banding tomorrow. It just amazes me how well the parents look after these little naked guys and get them through -33 degrees weather.

Will band on the 4th. Not too many. Maybe 12, too cold to take the parents off to look!

Probably the last time for me. Winter breeding. Not as cold here as were you are. But not sure if it worth it. I have 50 bands but due to circumstanes doubt if I will use them all. Have to cut way back. Have 30 young from last year. Only 15 raced. Rather lose them racing than culling.

Hal, I have 40 birds altogether, 10 of which are stock birds. This gives me 5 pairs and a maximum of 10 youngsters a round.
We fly 2 races each weekend: entry into one of them is limited to 10 birds and open to the other ace. You can see that raising just 10 birds will not cut it for me. I need to breed 4 or 5 rounds to have a group of youngsters with which to participate in all races.
That is one reason for me to breed early. Another reason is that winter is by far the cleanest environment to raise birds in. Very few bacteria survive in this cold air. Come time for the races my early youngsters will have a good immune system because they are relatively old already.
But there are also disadvantages: some early deaths, youngsters going out late to fly, etc.

We have two races a weekend. No limits. I never worry any more about not letting the youngout early anymore. As long as they can see their surroundings clearly very few problems. The loft I used this year is new. Plastc and metal. Very cold. The old wooden ones are much warmer. Banded first two this morning.

I consider it important that the droppings are fine indicating intestinal health and these I am quite pleased with.

Great pictures Hal.
Memories came flooding back of when a kid. Just how I remember first seeing the fabulous first youngster in late March / April. I think this was the time when I/we fell in love with the hobby.
Hopes and dream seared in the heart eh! Mind short-lived as Dad, for one reason or another, couldn't fly a kite. Like a lot more of very many club members lol.
But on a pleasant note club banter and morel boomed.
